The Mallorca capital is a top summer destination, but Palma is equally worth a visit once the winter months roll around. Here are five ways to enjoy Palma and its surrounding areas during the colder weather.

Take a road trip to Valldemossa

Take a 30-minute drive northwest of Palma and you’ll come across the historic village of Valldemossa. As well as the scenic mountain route, some of the village highlights include walking the flower-lined stone streets, visiting the Real Cartuja de Valldemossa monastery, and warming up with hot chocolate and some pastries from a local cafe.

Take the Almond Blossom Route

This peaceful circular driving route north of Palma is a highlight of late January and February. At its peak, the fields turn pink and white with blooming almond trees. Along the way, you can enhance your road trip by taking in the scenery and stopping at some traditional villages such as Bunyola and Caimari.

Explore the Old Town

Park on the city outskirts and walk into the historic heart of Palma. The old town features a number of highlights including the cathedral and adjacent Royal Palace of La Almudaina, both of which look even more delightful in the winter.

Enjoy a winter drive to Cap de Formentor Lighthouse

The road to Cap de Formentor Lighthouse is heavily restricted during the summer, however, is fully open during the winter, making it a must for your road trip. Less than an hour and a half northeast of Palma, this winding drive is beyond picturesque. Think a historic lighthouse, trails to elevated lookouts, and a sea cave.

Visit the Sineu traditional Wednesday market

Just a 40-minute drive from Palma, you’ll find Sineu which hosts one of the oldest agricultural markets on the island, dating back to 1306. In the winter, the market is very locals-heavy rather than a summer tourist trap, making it easier to take your time to look around. Grab a taste of Mallorca here, from local cheeses and sobressada sausage to the latest winter produce.

From the Avis car park at Palma de Mallorca Airport location to Palma’s city centre, it’s a short, scenic drive of around 20min. Just head west of Palma Airport via the Ma-19 and Av. de Gabriel Roca. Mallorca’s dynamic capital, Palma, is well worth exploring, with its spectacular cathedral, castle, palace and elegant harbourside. The city houses a captivating range of architectural influences.

You can’t miss the honey-hued Gothic Catedral de Santa María — its 44 m nave is one of Europe's tallest. The surrounding manicured gardens are adorned by a colour-popping fresco, courtesy of celebrated Spanish surrealist painter Joan Miró. For a more contemporary setting, take in the shiny white yachts and palm tree-pierced skyline at Palma’s busy marina.

Sun worshippers often head straight for the golden shores stretching out from Palma’s coastline, but with a hire car, there is so much more to be discovered. The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range — a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape are only half an hour away from the capital. Or head the art-filled enclave of Deià, revered for its pine-carpeted clifftops that plunge into the Balearic Sea, as well as its secluded ambience.  Across on the east coast, S’illot is a laid-back town on the east coast of Mallorca where the serious work of sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling prevail. In the far north, the vibrant, portside town of Alcúdia is reached in just under an hour and aside from its golden beaches is worth exploring for its superbly restored medieval old town.
