What's the best car to rent for my stay in the west of Ireland?

The right vehicle depends on your itinerary. Compact vehicles are ideal for couples and shorter journeys, while larger family cars provide extra comfort for longer road trips. If you're planning to explore the Wild Atlantic Way or travel with additional luggage, a spacious vehicle may be the most practical choice.

If you have not driven in Ireland before, be aware that you will be driving on the left hand side of the road and speed limits are displayed in kilometres per hour. It may be helpful to familiarise yourself with the road rules for Ireland before you pick up your Avis hire car.

Driving from Shannon Airport is one of the best ways to explore the west of Ireland and the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way. Many of the region's rural roads can be narrow and winding, particularly along coastal routes, so allow extra time for scenic journeys. If you're travelling with children, ensure appropriate child seats are used in line with Irish regulations.

From Shannon Airport, you'll be on the road within moments of collecting your vehicle, with some of western Ireland's most spectacular attractions just a short drive away. County Clare is home to the world-famous Cliffs of Moher, where dramatic sea views and rugged coastal landscapes await, as well as the unique limestone terrain of the Burren. History lovers can explore Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, while Ennis offers traditional Irish charm, colourful streets and lively music venues.

Shannon Airport is the gateway to some of the best driving routes in the world. Whether you plan to take a weekend trip or spread your itinerary over several days, this region is one of Ireland’s most exciting destinations – for good reason.

The route north from the airport will take you in the direction of Clare, Galway, Mayo and Donegal, while the route south connects you with Kerry and Cork.

Limerick and county Clare are both within easy driving distance from the airport, and Shannon’s close proximity to Galway and Burren places you in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way. This area of outstanding beauty will take your breath away, revealing untamed landscapes, spectacular coastlines, picturesque villages and unspoilt beaches.

Those interested in history may wish to visit one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks, Bunratty Castle, a 15-minute drive from Shannon Airport via the N19 and N18. From there, it’s only another 15 minutes further on the N18 to the fabulous city of Limerick. Here visitors can enjoy an authentic slice of Ireland, with its 13th century castle, friendly pubs and Georgian architecture.
